List of British Home Children – Kent County, Ontario, Canada

Below are the names of British Home Children (BHC) who ended up in Kent County, Ontario, Canada. The number after each name represents the year they arrived in Canada and is linked to the Library and Archives Canada immigration record for each. Additional information about each will soon follow to include other records/details of their life such as, military, placements, death, and hopefully photographs. While browsing the list, or doing your own researching, keep in my mind the variations of spelling, along with dates that are not always correct. Great example are the 3 brothers listed below: David, John and William, with their last name all spelled differently throughout the records found on them- Aitkin, Aikin and Aiken.

Be sure you use the search feature on the Home Children database on the Library and Archives Canada website, as some of the children have more than one entry with different types of information provided.

    • Hello Ruth. You are my first comment on here and I am sorry that I am just seeing this now. It has been a work in progress building it out and researching each one when I can. The name Barnwell I know well enough. Recall coming across the marker in Morpeth of one of the Barnwell boys that had served. And a few years back had ran into a lady in the cemetery here in Chatham that gave me a list of relations that were the Barnwell children. A descendant of one actually married into my family. It is a small-big world I say!! They are added to the list. If you have any photos or stories you’d like to share, please reach out on my Facebook page “British Home Children of Chatham Kent, Ontario, CA”

    Hello,

I stumbled onto this page as I modified my Google searches in hope to find out more related to my Great Grandfather – Napoleon Verity #354. I had heard stories, but we were not 100% certain he had come to Canada as a Home Child. We know that he came to Canada at the age of 5 in ~1882. He was assigned to (or raised by) George Gosnell and his sister of Highgate, Ontario. I am trying to track down some more details (e.g. boat he travelled on, any details of his upbringing, why he moved to rural Saskatchewan, etc).

Interesting story my (more senior) relatives have relayed is that when Napoleon was a young man, he was walking along a road one day and met a stranger. After some discussion, they found out that the stranger was his brother Walter, whom he had not seen or heard from since coming from England. They remained in touch throughout the reminder of their lives.

I have tried hunting through the boat records & archives, but not had much luck (partly as it is rather confusing and the details I have a very sparse). Any guidance on how to track down stories from Highgate in the late 1880s, George Gosnell relatives, or the boat records, I would greatly appreciate it.

Mary Ann Pearce was my great grandmother. She was born in 1861 or 1863. By 1871 she was orphaned and living in the ‘Children’s Establishment’ in Edmonton, England. In 1872 Maria Rye brought 53 young people to Canada on the ship “Sarmation”. It departed 1872-09-19 and arrived in Quebec 1872-09-30, Their destination was Niagara-on-the-lake, Ontario. Mary went to work at James & Hannah Byfield’s in Highgate, Orford Township. In 1881 she was still there, but left soon after to work for Thomas Routledge & family. In 1883 she married Joe Vyse.
